When The Magdalene Centre celebrated ten years of service in March 2003, it also celebrated the renewal of the Anglican Church's presence and service in the heart of inner city Adelaide.
St John's Mission Church was established in Moore Street in 1886, using the fabric of the original St John's in the Wilderness of Halifax Street, built in the 1840s. From 1905, it became known as the parish church of St Mary Magdalene. In 1912, the St Peter's College Mission was built. These developments took place in what was already a poorer residential and factory area. Significant welfare work was undertaken from the early 1900s in the years of the Great Depression and into the 1950s.
Since 1993, The Magdalene Centre has renewed this tradition of presence and service through emergency or practical assistance, community development and advocacy of justice in the city. In October 2000, the Emergency Assistance program was moved to larger rented premises at 42 Carrington Street Adelaide. The Bargain Centre was also opened at 46 Carrington Street with the aim of providing clothing assistance as well as covering the cost of rent and utilities through shop sales.
In 2003, The Magdalene Centre received Anglicare Australia's inaugural award for excellence in parish-based caring.
The Mission Hall in Moore Street is still used for community development activities and administration.
The Magdalene Centre is a co-operative venture between St Mary Magdalene's Moore Street, St John's Halifax Street, the Cathedral Church of St Peter and Anglicare SA.
The Mission of The Magdalene Centre is to be a prophetic community which, through service, connects the life of the Church with the lives of marginalised people in the city.
Crisis can have a devastating impact on the lives of individuals, families and communities. It can occur at any time, in many different situations. The effect of a personal crisis often extends across the many different aspects of our lives.
The Magdalene Centre, through its Assistance Centre, offers a range of antipoverty services, which for many are the first steps toward regaining control of their lives. Our integrated approach enables us to respond holistically to individual circumstances. Our partnerships enable us to connect people in crisis with relevant programs and services.
